College Football Betting - Week One

Starting a new regular feature this week — telling the story of my financial ruin in public.

Actually the goal this year is to replicate last season’s success.  In limited betting 2/3 games per weekend I actually had a successful gambling season for the first time in my life.  The only thing I enjoy doing more than placing the bets is talking about them, so let’s get this thing started.

Oklahoma (-33.5) over Utah State
In 2009, OU had two home games scheduled for September that they won by a combined score of 109-0.  The results have been similar in 2007 and 2008.  Utah State is terrible and has been for some time and will be completely overwhelmed.  Take the Sooners.

Cincinatti at Fresno State OVER 58
Neither of these defenses can handle a decent offense, and both of them have enough firepower to light up a scoreboard.  Expect this game to be in the high thirties or forties.

Virginia Tech vs Boise State UNDER 50
The line here keeps going up, and you should keep letting it go up and take the under.  Virginia Tech failed pretty miserably (the yards per play splits tell the story) against good defenses last season and Boise State’s defense is outstanding.  BSU has a good offense, but they’re not going to light up VT.  This game is staying under.

The NFL Is Predictable

At least in one regard:  when a team is favored by more than 10 points.

With the Bears squeaking out a victory over Detroit this weekend, that makes NFL teams favored by more than 10 points 1-8 against the spread this year.

That is a gambling trend to take advantage of, my friends.

Make It 5-0-1

I’m doing pretty well, no?

What I’m Watching on Sunday (10-12-08)

Time to sneak in another edition of picks and quick thoughts on this week’s game.  Just a reminder, I’m 4-0-1 this season picking games with the spread.

In terms of the Eagles and Niners, I see this game as a low scoring contest.  Unfortunately for the Eagles, that may make David Akers a rather important piece of the puzzle, and there’s no reason to have any confidence in him at this point.

Watch to see if any of the Eagles wide receivers are able to get off the line of scrimmage easily against the Niners excellent cornerback duo of Walt Harris and Nate Clements.  If they can get into their routes and maintain timing with Donovan, the Eagles can take this one.

Carolina @ Tampa Bay (-2) — The NFC South is ugly.  It’s the modern NFL at its zenith — very minor differences between teams.  So this spread is pretty small.  But the Bucs are tough at home, especially their defense.  And Jeff Garcia is back at the helm and he’ll have their offense moving.  Expect the Bucs to win this one, give up the points.

You… You Keep On Truckin’

Ugh.  This week is going to suck even worse than last.  A few more thoughts before I try and get some work done:

Gambling Update:  I’m now 4-0-1 with gambling advice after going 1-0-1 this weekend.  Are you listening yet?

People outside of Philly are finally starting to notice David Akers’ problems.  He really doesn’t need any more attention drawn his way at the moment.  This could be the beginning of the end.

The Eagles once again got caught with Bunkley and Patterson on the bench for a critical running play — the final ‘Skins TD.  It was 3rd and goal from the three and the Eagles had their nickel D on the field.

This is going to be, and should be, a rough week for Reid in the press.  This is pretty damning — from Matt Moseley’s ESPN.com NFC East Blog:

I was intrigued by something Redskins cornerback Carlos Rogers told me immediately after the game. He said he marveled at the Eagles’ first 15 plays of the game, but noticed that things grew stale after that. It’s not as if he was trying to badmouth the Eagles, but I think it speaks to how Philadelphia’s first drive looked dramatically different from the way it played the rest of the day.

“We’d never seen those plays they came out with,” Rogers said. “I’m serious. Those were great plays. But after that, I guess our coaching took over.”

Your move, Andy.

What I’m Watching on Sunday

I didn’t get a chance to write this weekly post last week.  I was at a wedding in New York’s wine country, spending most of my weekend lounging on a dock jutting out into beautiful Keuka Lake.

At this point in the season I’m 3-0 for gambling advice, and I don’t plan to miss any more weeks.  Here we go.

Tampa Bay @ Denver (-3) — At first glance, the spread looks too low, right?  Jay Cutler is playing like the best quarterback in the NFL, they are at home, and Tampa is perpetually mediocre.  The problem here is that smart gamblers see that Griese and the Bucs offense should be able to put up points against a terrible, terrible Broncos defense.

It won’t matter.  Denver is going to put up 30+ in this game.  The Bucs may be capable of putting up 25 points, but not any more.  Expect a couple of key mistakes from Griese.  Take the Broncos.

Cincinnatti @ Dallas (-17) — This is way, way, way too much for any NFL team.

Since the season started, NFL teams favored by more than 10 points are 0-3 against the spread.  This is something you should take advantage of as a gambler.

I’m just sayin’…

If you had taken my gambling advice so far this year, you’d be 3-0.

Week 2, Skins +1 over the Saints
Week 3, Bengals +13.5 over the Giants, Seahawks -9.5 over the Rams

What I’m Watching on Sunday

Jacksonville and Buffalo.  Everyone is fawning over the Bills performance last week.  But beating a crippled Seahawks team two thousand miles from their home isn’t all that great of an accomplishment, OK?  Beating the Jags in Florida would be.  Jason Peters should be back for this one, keep an eye on him.

The Texans.  I think this team has talent enough to make the playoffs, but not if they start 0-2.  Steve Slaton is starting, and he will be tested against the heavy hitting Ravens.  The Ravens D-Line is a bit banged up, he might have some opportunites.  [EDIT — OK, this will be Monday].

Skins and Saints.  Fans in DC are already panicking.  But they caught a break in the form of an injury ravaged Saints team coming to town.  Look for the Skins to ROLL in this one.  Vegas has it at even right now.  Take the Skins.

Charles Barkley Hates Himself

Running a few errands around lunchtime I caught an interview with Sir Charles on the Jim Rome Show.  Charles was lamenting his decision to gamble on the Patriots when his gut was telling him otherwise.

Rome:  “Charles, how much money are we talking here?
Barkley:  “About four hundred thousand.

Nice, Charles.
